Appearance:
 
The Oriental cockroach is larger in size compared to the German cockroach. They measure approximately 17-30mm in length, and have a shiny dark brown/black body. Female cockroaches have shorter wings and wider bodies than males. Both male and female cockroaches have long and flexible antennae’s.

Where do they live?

Oriental cockroaches also known as (Blatta orientalis) tend to live mainly in heated buildings for example inside buildings, dust bins, waste compactor’s, cellars, boiler houses, lift shafts. While oriental cockroaches are larger than other cockroaches they will exploit small cracks to gain access into dark, moist, heated areas.

Oriental cockroaches are a common pest problem in Ireland.

How do they breed?

The female cockroach deposit’s her ootheca (egg sack) prior to hatching. Each female produces between 5-10 ootheca during her life time, and each ootheca contains 16-18 eggs. The incubation period lasts between 48-80 days at 20-25 degrees celsius. There are 7-10 nymphal stages to adulthood.

Oriental cockroaches live between 60-250 days depending on temperature, and they do not complete a full cycle of metamorphosis.

What do Oriental Cockroaches eat? 

Oriental cockroaches eat any type of organic matter they can find. Organic matter can simply be explained as once a living organism i.e. plant or animal.

How do I know if I have a problem with Oriental Cockroaches? 

You will be able to either visibly see oriental cockroaches or their droppings in your home or building.

Are Oriental Cockroaches harmful to humans? 

Yes, Oriental cockroaches do pose a health risk to humans. They are known to contaminate food contact surfaces and food materials with their poor hygiene practices.
